5 hikes in Norway you need to try

Norway has a lot of stunning nature! And what better way to explore it than by hiking?  During our two-week road trip, we did some amazing hikes. Let me share with you the hikes that we did.

Trolltunga

I think this hike is the most famous and popular one. But don’t underestimate it: it’s a 20km hike out and back that will take you almost a full day. And on weekends and during the summer months, it can be very busy. So busy that you probably will have to wait to get the famous picture. But although it is a long hike, it isn’t technically difficult to do. I wrote a separate post with all the information you will need to hike to Trolltunga

A person stands triumphantly on a jagged cliff overlooking a vast fjord under a cloudy sky, conveying a sense of adventure and awe.

Preikestolen

And this is the famous hike number two of Norway. This one is considerably shorter compared to Trolltunga. Try to start the hike as early as possible, as this is a very popular hike. And you don’t want to do such a beautiful hike waiting on people who are hiking up. There is also a guide for the Preikestolen hike.

A group of people stand on a towering, flat cliff overlooking a deep blue fjord. The rocky landscape and overcast sky create a dramatic scene of Preikestolen in Norway.

Mt Prest

Hiking Mt Prest was a difficult one for me: it was a tough climb up. From the top of it, you will have an amazing view of Aurlandsfjord. The hike is 6.33 km round trip with a total ascent of 630m, which will take you about 3-4 hours to go out and back. There is a small parking lot at the start of the hike that fills up fast. When going up to the parking lot, you will pass the famous Stegastein viewpoint. This is also the place for a last bathroom break.

Although the trail is quite steep at times, the hike itself is not that difficult. Make sure that you wear good hiking shoes and wear different layers of clothing. During the summer months, wear sun protection and bring plenty of water. Find trail information here.

Peer Gynt Hytta Hike

This hike is located in the beautiful Rondane National Park, the oldest national park in Norway. You can park your car for free near the Smuksjoseter Fjellstue. The hotel isn’t open all year around so keep in mind that toilets are not available when the hotel is closed.

The hike starts right after the hotel, where you can choose between two ways. We first followed the way along the Hovringsvatne lake. The hike is very easy to follow and brings you across beautiful hills, water, and views. Early in the hiking season, the trail can be wet at some points, and there can even be some snow. We didn’t come across any people when we did the hike in June; it was so beautiful and quiet.

Before you arrive at the Peer Gynt Hytta, you will see the Brakdalsbekken. A river flows through a small gorge in steps, creating a beautiful little waterfall. If you want to go to the huts themselves, you will have to cross the river. To go back, you can take the same way back or go over the hill, hiking a loop. In total, the hike is about 10km out and back.

Vettisfossen

In the Utladalen valley, there is a beautiful hike where you will see at least 5 waterfalls. At the end of the hike, there is Vettisfossen, one of the tallest waterfalls in Norway. The hike is about 13km round trip and mostly flat. Only the last part can be tricky. There is also a complete guide for your hike to Vettisfossen
