Dusseldorf Christmas Market - Travel Eat Enjoy Repeat

Dusseldorf Christmas Market

The Christmas market (or Weihnachtsmarkt in German) as we know it comes originally from Germany. Not surprisingly, this is where you will find the largest Christmas markets.

Although the Christmas markets of Aachen and Cologne are the best known, the Christmas market of Dusseldorf is also great fun to visit. It is fun to visit it for a day or you can do a weekend getaway there are nice hotels enough to find in Düsseldorf.

We stayed at the INNSIDE Düsseldorf Seestern, which is perfectly located just outside the city center, right by the streetcar stop. It is a very modern hotel with nicely decorated rooms and a fantastic breakfast.

In 2024 the Christmas market will occur from November 17 to December 30.

Parking

To drive in the city center of Düsseldorf, you need an environmental vignette.

If you do not have an environmental vignette, you can also park on the outskirts of town. There are several P+R lots where you can park for free. You then just take the streetcar to the city center.

We parked in the Haus Meer parking lot. In 20 minutes we were at the Christmas market (streetcar U76 to Heinrich-Heine-Allee stop).

The Dusseldorf Christmas Market

Düsseldorf’s Christmas market is spread over several squares. Here you will find many stalls where you can buy beautiful handmade goods and, of course, enjoy delicious food and drinks.

Compared to Christmas markets in Belgium, Christmas markets in Germany (and thus Dusseldorf) close at 8 p.m. during the week and 9 p.m. on weekends.

Food and drinks

Visiting a Christmas market, besides the fun, is mainly to enjoy the typical dishes and a nice glass of gluhwein.

What did we all eat and drink?

We started with a nice glass of gluhwein. Although the red gluhwein is the most famous, you should try the white or rosé gluhwein. The white is often spicier and sweeter than the red, but just as tasty. You get the gluhwein in nice glasses, and you have to pay a deposit (between 2 and 4 euros) but you just get it back when you return the glasses.

Of course, the typical curry sausage and bratwurst should not be missed. The curry sausage is actually a bratwurst in pieces topped with curry ketchup and sprinkled with curry powder.

Eggnog is also recommended. The spicy milk drink is dangerously punishing, though.

I saw these giant pancakes at several people’s houses and, of course, as a real sweet tooth, I couldn’t resist. I took one with Nutella. My friend enjoyed one with Nutella and eggnog.

The sautéed mushrooms and fried camembert were less to our liking.

We ended with raclette: delicious melted cheese on a sandwich with herb butter.

What else can you find? Delicious puffed chestnuts, Flammkuchen, apple pancakes, …

As you can see, we enjoy not only the atmosphere of a Christmas market but especially all the delicious food.
