Hotel Serenity Makadi Beach in Hurghada, Egypt

Serenity Makadi Beach is located in Makadi Bay, outside of Hurghada. It is a big hotel complex that is designed in Moroccan style. Outside the hotel, there is nothing to do, so if you want to go to Hurghada, you have to ask for a shuttle or a taxi. But why would you want to visit downtown Hurghada if you have everything you want in this beautiful hotel?

When you enter the hotel, you are welcomed into a beautiful lobby and greeted with a glass of cold karkadeh (a sweet hibiscus tea). At the reception, you get all the information about the hotel and your luggage is being transferred to your room.

The rooms are all located in a beautiful garden with palm trees and a lot of flowers. The different buildings don’t have an elevator, so if you are having trouble climbing up stairs, it is best to ask for a room at the ground level.

The rooms are very spacious and clean. The two separate beds were very inviting after a long journey, but we still have some exploration to do. The bathroom had a big walk-in shower and a number of toiletries. From our balcony, we had a nice view over the Red Sea. There are coffee and tea available in the room and every day, you will get a new bottle of water in the fridge. And sometimes you can find your towels in different shapes on your bed.

One of the main reasons for coming to Egypt is to enjoy the sun while sipping a cocktail by the pool or on the beach. At Serenity Makadi Beach there are 4 pools of which 2 have salt water. Of course, there is also a beautiful beach with a beach bar. Both at the beach and the pools, you will find loungers and umbrellas. The service at the different bars is very friendly and fast. Like at any other hotel, there are some people who will want to sell you excursions, spa treatments (more on that later). If you are not interested, you can ask for a ‘do not disturb’ sign at the towel desk to hang at your umbrella. Or you can use your ‘do not disturb’ sign from your room.

The wifi connection is very fast and good in the lobby but is horrible at the pools and your room. This was a disadvantage for us and you have to keep this in mind, especially if you are addicted to your phone or iPad.

Because we wanted to stay active during our holiday, we specifically looked for a hotel with a decent fitness center. From the pictures website, we thought Serenity Makadi Beach had a fairly decent one. It was disappointing to find this gym closed and there was a new one, which was much smaller. Luckily there weren’t a lot of people who were taking advantage of the gym, or it would have been very cozy. A larger space (not inside the spa center) with some mats and separate benches would be a big improvement.

At the spa, we booked a medical massage and the Cleopatra treatment. The latter consists of some time in the sauna and the jacuzzi, after which you get a scrub and are wrapped in towels. After showering you get a 45-minute whole body massage. The day after a very long trip to Caïro, we had the medical massage. This is a 60-minute massage which mainly focusses on your back and neck. I would recommend both, but especially the Cleopatra treatment.

And then, the food, also very important during an all-inclusive holiday for us. During breakfast, there were different fruits, cereal, bread, sweets, eggs, …; everything you could think of. The croissants, pancakes, and omelets are freshly made and baked outside. I loved my yogurt with fresh pomegranate seeds and muesli for breakfast. For lunch, there was a big focus on salads but with still a decent amount of other hot choices. And of course, there are sweets and fresh fruit for dessert. For dinner, however, we thought it was too monotone, more or less the same thing every day. It would be nice to have some theme evenings like Italian or typical Egyptian foods. And the chance to have your drinks being brought to the table would also be nice. The food wasn’t bad per se, but it lacked variety. The Egyptian bread, which is freshly made outside, is amazing.

For our trip to Caïro, we got a breakfast box which was very well stocked. And to our surprise, there was a pretty extensive late dinner with a variety of hot dishes available.

All in all, it was a very good hotel to enjoy the Egyptian sun by the pool with a cocktail in your hand. The rooms were spacious and clean with a huge walk-in shower. The food was good but it could be better if there was more variety.
