Iceland – Food Tour Reykjavik

We love food, and that is only an understatement. So, when I saw that you could do a food tour in Reykjavik, I didn’t hesitate and booked one.  You really get to know a country by its food. We booked a tour at Wake Up Reykjavik

Our guide Egill met us at the Harpa concert hall and his first question was: Are you hungry? A very good start in my opinion.

We stopped at a decent number of restaurants to try all the typical Icelandic food and dishes. In between restaurants, you explore the city and can see some of its beautiful street art

First stop was lamb soup at Viking together with a local beer. I love lamb and the lamb soup was delicious. The beer was a white beer, something like the Belgian Hoegaarden

Here my boyfriend also tasted fermented shark. Not for me, the smell alone was enough to put me off.

Second stop was a small cheese and meat shop. We tasted some Icelandic cheeses and learned more about the history of cheese making in Iceland. Or more the lack of history because they only started recently with making cheese. There were also some meats to try, one of them being horse meat. Not a lot of people like to eat horse, but I think it is delicious. It is more tender than beef and the way it was prepared here was something I didn’t taste before.

At Café Loki, a small restaurant most famous for their rye bread, we had some rye ice cream. It is interesting to taste the sweet of the ice cream with the chunks of rye bread in them. Delicious!!!

Of course, some skyr is also mandatory during a food tour. We enjoyed ours outside, while we were walking to the next stop.

In Reykjavik, there is 1 place that is incredibly famous: the hot dog stand. You cannot visit Reykjavik without buying a hot dog here. We were lucky that the line wasn’t very long. The expectations were high but they weren’t completely met, probably because our Bicky Burger in Belgium has similar sauces and toppings.

Next stop was the harbour for some rock crab soup and fried cod tongues at Kopar. And we cannot forget the delicious bread that they serve here.

The final stop was dessert at Apotek. And oh my god, this was one of the best desserts I ever had. Soo delicious: sweet and sour and crunchy and soft. Just heaven.

The piece of chocolate Egill gave us as a goodbye present was more than welcome the day after at the airport for a quick snack while waiting to check in.

This was the first food tour we ever did but there will be more to come for sure. We had an amazing time with our guide Egill who showed us another side of Reykjavik and let us experience the best food Iceland and Reykjavik have to offer. When you are in Reykjavik, definitely book this tour. If you are staying longer in Reykjavik, you can do some day tours to explore the surroundings. Did you ever do a food tour? In which city?
