Iceland – Whale watching with Salka

Whale watching in Iceland was an experience we didn’t want to miss. So, we booked a 3h whale watching tour with Salka from Husavik.

After announcing yourself at their little café, you can go to the boat where you are greeted by the captain and somebody from Salka. For our trip, this was a marine biologist who told us a lot about whales and specifically the humpback whale, which was the one we saw.

We already did some dolphin watching when we were in Egypt and the Canary Island but this was a totally different experience.

First, you don’t go whale watching wearing a short and top, but with a warm overall, gloves and a warm hat. And there is a lot more waiting to be done (at least during our trip).

Our boat was small, smaller then I was expecting, and afterward, you understand why they are small.

It was amazing to see the whales come up to the surface and we were lucky to see them up close a few times. The most beautiful pictures are the ones that you see the tail sticking out of the water. That is also the point that they will dive deeper and you have to wait before they will resurface again. And because you don’t know where they will resurface again, we were scanning the entire water surface.

When we saw one, or one of the other boats saw one, we hurried towards it.

By the end of the tour, you also get some coffee/tea/hot chocolate with some cookies.

Too late

This was a truly amazing experience: the whales, the view, and by the end the sun that was peeking through the clouds. Whale watching was THE highlight of my trip to Iceland.

I was a little bit afraid upfront because I don’t really have sea legs, but I didn’t get sick. My tip: if you are prone to seasickness, take some tablets and eat something before going on to the boat. It would be a shame that the only thing you would see is the jellyfish next to the boat because you are sick.

This post is the result of a nice collaboration with Salka Whale Watching.

Want to know what else we did during our road trip around Iceland? We did a Glacier walk and a food tour. And of course, we want to share some of the highlights of our trip.
