Must-visit The Goonies film locations

The Goonies is an iconic coming-of-age movie from 1985. A group of kids living in the “Goon Docks” neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon, try to save their homes from foreclosure. When they find a treasure map, the adventure to find the fortune of One-Eyed Willy (a legendary pirate) begins. The Goonies never say die!

Where was the Goonies movie filmed?

Most of the on-location filming was done in Oregon, specifically Astoria. Many of these locations are easy to visit, but remember that some are private property. After picking up your rental car at Portland International Airport, a two-hour drive will bring you to Astoria. Visiting the Goonies filming locations is a must for all Goonies fans, so let me share some of these locations!

Filming locations in Astoria, Oregon

The port city of Astoria is the oldest in the state of Oregon. It’s located about 2 hours from Portland and 3h from Seattle. The Goonies was filmed mostly in Astoria, so you can see a lot of the locations all over town.

The Goonies house

The Goonies house (or Mikey’s house) is located at 368 38th Street. You can park in one of the neighboring streets and walk up the driveway. Keep in mind that this is a private house. The owner doesn’t mind that you look at the house from the outside and take pictures. But don’t bother them! They have a donation box so you can leave a tip if you want.

Next to the Goonies House, you can see Data’s house.

The Clatsop County jail

The jail where Jake Fratelli was held is the Oregon Film Museum. You can see a lot of behind-the-scenes and movie props in the museum. You can also make your own movie or learn more about some other movies that were shot at Astoria like Kindergarten Cop. The self-guided tour of the museum is rather short (about 30 minutes). And they sell a bunch of memorabilia.

Flavel House Museum

This is located across from the Oregon Film Museum and is one of the most beautiful buildings in Astoria. Mikey’s father worked as a museum curator here.

Astoria Brewing Company

It’s not really a filming location, but they sell a huge amount of memorabilia, like T-shirts and other stuff. And they have very good burgers.

The Oregon coastline

Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock

Beautiful Cannon Beach is a must-stop when driving along the coastline. This is the beach where the Fratelli car chase ended. On Cannon Beach, you will also find Haystack Rock; one of the tallest sea stacks in the world. It is this rock that the Goonies used to navigate the map of One-Eyed Willy.

Ecola State Park

Ecola State Park is next to Cannon Beach. At Ecola State Park, there are several Goonies filming locations. The best-known location would be where the Fratelli’s had their hideout and the start of the treasure hunt! The Lighthouse Lounge was built specifically for the movie and was taken down afterward. This is also the place in the movie where the kids are riding their bikes through the forest and where Mikey’s brother gets pushed off this bike.
