Calgary brewery guide

When we were in Calgary, we decided to visit several breweries. There are a lot of them in Calgary, so we had to make a choice. We opted for the ones that were close to our hotel Days Inn by Windham Calgary South, but we also visited one in the city centre.

Last best brewing

Last Best brewing is in the city of Calgary. The brewpub serves not only a nice selection of beers but also has a nice menu for brunch, lunch and dinner. They 4 core beers: There will be porter, Show Pony, Last Best IPA, and Dirty Bird Black Lager. We enjoyed some brunch here (BBQ breakfast poutine and Huevos Last Bestos) while trying 6 samples of beer. If the weather is nice, you can sit on the cosy patio.

We had the following beers: Show pony (Australian Pale Ale |5%) – IPA#3 Tokio Drift (American IPA | 7.2%) – Dirty Bird Black Lager (Schwarzbier | 5%) – Beltline Blonde (Blonde Ale | 4.9%) – Spelt Saison (Saison | 6%) – Big Sister’s fruited sour (Sour | 4.8%)

I really liked the sour and the spelt saison. My boyfriend also liked the Tokyo Drift and Dirty Black Lager.

Annex Ale Project

Annex Ale Project is in the South of Calgary. There is a taproom where you can enjoy their beers. And if you are hungry, you can grab a hotdog or burger from Lil Empire. Don’t forget the dirty fries!

We tried the Simple Geometry, a fruited sour (5.4%) and a Fresh Platitudes Aussie IPA (6.3%). I really loved the sour beer but wasn’t a fan of the IPA. For my boyfriend, it was the other way around ?. I am just not a big fan of IPA.

The Establishment Brewing Company

Next door from Annex Ale Project, is The Establishment Brewing Company. We loved the view from the taproom on the brewery hall. We ordered 4 samplers, so we got to try a little bit of everything.

The beers we had: Kept secret (Bière de Garde | 8.4%) – Bergamot Brett Saison (Saison | 6.6%) – Super Fusion (Fruited sour | 5.5%) – Night moves (Milk Stout | 4.2%).

My favorite? Super Fusion, but that shouldn’t come as a surprise. Although I also liked the saison. My boyfriend really liked the milk stout.

In the same area is also Cabin Brewing Company. In the cosy taproom, we ordered 4 samplers: Movin’ to the Country (Fruit beer | 5.5%) – Here & Now (Brown ale | 5.5%) – Super Saturation (Pale Ale | 6%) – Misty Frequency (New England IPA | 7%).

There were all ok beers, we didn’t have one favourite.

Born Colorado Brewing

This very small brewery is across from Cabin Brewing Company. We again ordered 4 samplers to share: Golden Ale (5.4%) – Mile High (American Pale Ale | 5%) – Autumn Amber (Red Ale | 5.2%) – Arm Candy Milk Stout (6.5%).

For me, there was not a clear favourite, although the milk stout had an interesting smoked flavour. This was also the reason my boyfriend loved this beer.

These were all the breweries we visited, but there are much more. Here you will find a map with all breweries in Calgary (update September 2019).
