How to request an eTA?

You can request an eTA for Canada easily online through the website of the Canadian government. It is best to do this as fast as possible after booking your plane ticket.

You also need an international passport that is valid for at least 6 months after entering Canada. Make sure that all information you fill out is correct and matches the information in your passport.

The application form is completely in English, so if English is not your mother tongue, double-check all the information. You will also need to answer questions about your job for example. On the homepage, you will also find documents in different languages that can help with filling out the form.

After payment of 7 Canadian $ (only with credit card), you will receive your eTA in your mailbox after a few minutes.

How long is the eTA valid?

The eTA is valid for 5 years started from the application date. If your international passport expires in the meantime, you will have to request a new eTA.

During those 5 years, you can enter Canada multimple times, as long as it is for maximum 6 months at a time.

Can I go to Canada without a valid eTA?

No. At the check-in counter of the airport, your passport will be scanned to see if you have a valid eTA. Indien you don’t have one, you will not be able to board the plane.

Which document do you need when arriving in Canada?

Your eTA is not a physical document, so you can’t print it. It is linked to your passport.
